The New Map of the Netherlands captures the changing face of the Netherlands
Which parts of the Dutch landscape are set to change in future? Where will new housing, new business and industrial estates, nature reserves, water retention areas and infrastructure go? Which districts and neighbourhoods will be restructured and upgraded? Will that green open space opposite remain green? The New Map of the Netherlands presents a comprehensive picture of the future of town and country. A team of enthusiastic planners at the Netherlands Institute of Housing and Planning (Nirov) collects all the development plans produced across the country from local authorities, provincial councils, water boards and government departments. With their assistance we are able to bring together thousands of plans in one place and make them available to all on our website, www.nieuwekaart.nl. The spatial interventions proposed by both public and private organisations can be viewed and compared. Links and relations between the various plans are put into perspective, potential conflicts brought to light and spatial impacts revealed. The New Map clarifies who wants to do what, where and when.
Interactive Map
Via the interactive map on our website you can see which areas the plans we have collated refer to and view their content. You can also send us information online if you see that a plan is incomplete or incorrectly represented. The various map layers can be turned on or off, allowing the user to see, for example, if there are any plans to build in the Green Heart (National Landscape) or in a low-lying polder (by confronting it with the relief map of the Netherlands).
There are also discussion forums about the Interactive Map where you can share your thoughts and experiences with using the map with other forum users. There are also forums for discussing issues raised by the plans and for submitting comments.
Plan Database
Plans can be called up via the map or retrieved online from our database (in Dutch). If you want to review all the plans made by a specific municipality or get a clear picture of all the information available about a single plan, the Plan Database is the place to start. Besides the information on the plans included in the New Map, the database also provides an overview of plans not yet incorporated into the map but which have been reported in the news. All in all, the database provides an up-to-date and complete picture of spatial developments in the Netherlands.
GIS file
If you are a professional working with geographic information systems (GIS), an attractive option is to view the New Map in a GIS environment. Using the GIS file you can make selections, add you own data and perform spatial analyses.

Wall map
The wall map depicts what the Netherlands will look like when all concrete development plans have been implemented. You can order the poster (103 x 145 cm) via the website.
Submitting plans
If you know of any new plans, please tell us! You may send plans to us digitally or by post. It is also possible to upload them via the interactive site. Therefore you need to subscribe and login first. More information on submitting plans can be found on our website (in Dutch).
